Disasters are largely inevitable, predictable, avoidable and manageable. Understanding risk, whether real or perceived, is key to the needs of disaster management across all sectors and has become a core concern of the development, emergency response and humanitarian sectors. This course uses a series of taught sessions and discussions to unravel the concepts, examine existing policy and practices, and identify future strategies that can be applied to assess and reduce risks, and to manage disasters once they occure.
